About Dorsey Coe - Occupation, Interests, etc.

Top Interests

1Photography: I was hooked when I was just a boy. Pinhole cameras, makeshift darkrooms and the smell of stop bath (acetic acid). After two and a half decades of serious photography, I'm still hooked. Digital is definitely "in" and while I don't mind not having to get my hands wet anymore, I do miss watching a photograph develop right before my eyes.

2Macintosh Servers & Networking: As I stated on the front page, I learned more about computers than I ever wanted to know. The good news is I gained an appreciation for them, specifically Macs and the os X operating system, a BSD Unix derivative. Today I help companies take full advantage of Snow Leopard Server's collaboration services.

3Bass Guitar: Here is an instrument that doesn't get much recognition on its own. In fact, most people can't pick it out of a band - they won't even notice it - until it stops. I think bass has helped me learn to "play well with others", a skill I now possess, without which I might otherwise have fallen into complete social ineptness.

4Web Development: Boutique server hosting and web development has been a natural extension of my interests in computers and photography. Web standards have matured and infrastructure pricing has plummeted, making seriously good CMS websites within the reach of even the smallest of businesses. Contact me if you're interested.

About this Photography Website

Although I am particularly passionate about wedding photography, I am asked all the time to do many different kinds of work. I've realized that making great wedding photographs entails obtaining and acquiring all the various skills and equipment that you would need for just about any type of photographic assignment, so I've decided to showcase my approach. I am also predisposed to sharing what I have learned over many years, in an effort to help anyone who may be like-minded, and I'm hoping to get feedback from other photographers as to the many tips and tricks they have learned over the years that I might have missed.

  • Wedding Photography
Wedding photography is my passion. While the medium has changed dramatically in recent years, the basic principles remain the same There are three correlative components to wonderful wedding images; image quality, technique and style. Image quality and technique are defined primarily by equipment, academia and skill. Style is what truly characterizes a photograph.
  • Portraiture
    Seniors to Corporate headshots:

  • Commercial Photography
This type of work is quoted on a case by case basis, normally at an hourly rate plus expenses, or a day rate should the project require that kind of time. Contact me via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 970-462-7770

About the Photography Tutorials

This is probably more of a Tips & Tricks website than full blown tutorials, but that can change. I have a few tips & tricks on the regular site, with the bulk of the information on the membership portion of the site. Membership is free, and is only required to help me gauge interest and determine how much additional time, if any, I need to devote to this.

  • Lighting
Everything from DIY portable flash modifiers, to studio strobes and light ratios.
  • Software
This is more of a "what works for me" and "how I do it" section.
  • Equipment
No nonsense approach to what you really need to get started, and specifically "run & gun" setups.
  • Presentation
You can present your masterpeice on any material imaginable today. I suggest some traditional and emerging methods. Also a talk on "client needs".
  • Design
In addition to a strong composition, I believe it is important to adhere to the C.R.A.P. philosophy many designers and illustrators use when creating artwork.
